Being Brave

Offering Yoga for Physical Trauma Recovery at Brave is an incredible Seva (a selfless service that is performed without any expectation of result or award for performing it). This selfless action lies at the heart of the path of karma yoga.

Brave is a Public Benefit Organization that was started in 2004 by survivors of serious physical trauma. They set out to write the brave ‘manual for recovery’ which teaches an essential skill set to help people from all walks of life who have experienced serious physical trauma.

The NPO is based in Bo Kaap, in Cape Town, and is doing incredible work through restorative yoga and meditation. Additional support in the form of trauma counseling, occupational therapy, posture alignment practices, and a nutritional program help to create a holistic environment for healing to take place.

The Ayurvedic teachings reach all aspects of daily life. From getting up on the ‘right’ side of the bed before the sun-rises, to cultivating an attitude of gratitude, and using mantra’s to affirm your healing.

One of the principles I love from Brave’s manual is ‘do one thing for someone else daily – even when bedridden, immobile or infirm we can give a smile, encouragement and appreciation’
