In my short time assisting Dream Higher with climbing activities I have learnt more than my heart felt it could hold. The NPO and social initiative introduces vulnerable youth from Cape Town to the sport of rock climbing.
Through indoor bouldering sessions at Bloc 11 and CityROCK, and outdoor days around the Cape Peninsula and in the Cederberg, the participants benefit from a training plan and the watchful eye of professional coaches.
The time spent outdoors with experienced climbers helps to build confidence, bridge social gaps, and create connections with the natural world.

What makes climbing so beneficial to youth?
Climbing brings up fear, and can be a frustrating sport at times. It is this quality that I believe leads to the internal growth which is soon visible on the outside. By persevering until you succeed on a problem, emotions such as joy and pride soon take hold.
It is this emotional growth, paired with the sense of community, and an exposure to the beauty of the natural world that makes climbing so suited to bridge social divides and connect youth.
